I was happy with the feedback from my tutor for assignment 1. I understand it's a bit uncommon to use my camera phone for it but I had my reasoning for it and I still would not go out there today, to o this exercise carrying my Canon.
I must admit, as my tutor noticed, is that on the surface it is a lovely place to live. Close to the town and it's amenities and near the motorway. So my aim to to show the nicer side of my estate through my pictures did show. And again, my tutor was right, looking at the photos it could be a housing estate anywhere in the country. There's nothing specific that could differentiate it by it's overall appearance.
So I have been considering what to do differently for this exercise. I thought, seems as I made it look all sunny and pleasant for assignment 1, I will try to make it look a little more drab and 'dark', if you like, for the purpose of showing a contrast. I will take my tutors comments about being aware of the sequencing and making the photos more professional into account and try to take the focus away from the estates general appearance.
To do this I need to focus more on little details maybe, and think of different factors that could influence my images. For example:
- weather
- rubbish
- fly tipping
- waste
- graffiti
- metal fencing
- cars
- people
- animals???
Im not going to rush this process and again, I need to try to fit in when I am able to take the photos for this so I will report back with the photos when I can.
Revisit:
Its been a long while since this exercise came up and I've always had it in my mind since, especially when I'm walking around my estate. But if I'm honest, Ive managed to take a few extra images but nothing that would bring anymore to the assignment and I don't think they would give the viewer any further insight into my estate.
I looked at the images that I originally submitted and could see what my tutor saw. The fact it was sunny and spring, so colourful, made it look like a pretty little estate. If I am trying to portray the reputation of the estate, I thought to maybe change the images to make it a little less pretty. I removed some of the images from the collection and when out, I took a few extra to add into the collection. Most of the images now show the rubbish, waste and graffiti that is common around my estate. I also wanted to change the images to black and white to remove the colour and make it look a little less appealing.
The selection of images reworked for the sake of this exercise are below:
